Our questions were answered by Lead Game Designer — Roman Campos Oriola.
Two of last Ghost Recon games had appreciable differences between console and PC versions. Apparently, it happened because they were made by different developers. Future Soldier is in hands of Ubisoft Paris. Will console and PC versions have any appreciable differences in terms of gameplay, graphics, etc.?
Indeed, there is, as the PC Ghost Recon game is not Future Soldier, but Ghost Recon Online. A free-to-play, competitive approach on the Ghost Recon brand. It’s really a different game, different graphics and gameplay.
Future Soldier is planned for PS3 & Xbox 360 and will take full benefit of both platforms.
As we know, plot of the game will take place in a future and the Ghosts will be like “ground F-16” with all their high-end equipment. How many fantastic features depended on that equipment will be accessible in battles?
More than features, it’s a Special Forces experience: 4 men vs. an Army.
So we worked with our consultant to define how the technology could help the Ghost in their fight:
- First as a soldier I don’t want to b seen by my enemy. So you will have a lot of equipment to help you remain hidden (active camouflage etc…)
- Then I want to have information on my enemy. That is why we have a lot of gameplay features around retrieving the position and the shape of my enemies. What we call the intel.
- And I want my 4 men squad to act like one entity. So we have all the augmented reality that is here to provide you information on your team and help you coordinate with them.
So, tell our readers about guns and equipment Ghosts use. In the video trailer we could see invisible cloak, small rocket launcher and armored battle drone. Will they be available in the game? What other devices will we see?
First the guns. We have 52 different guns that you can fully customize in what we call The Gunsmith. There are more that 49 attachments by guns and 10 points of customization on each of them. So that makes quite a ton of different weapons.
Then we have the recon drone. It’s a small UAV that the ghost can deploy from anywhere on the battlefield. The UAV can fly around and retrieve intel on the enemy. You can even land on any surface and make it crawl. While crawling the UAV is almost invisible and much more stealthier.
The Ghost also have the X-ray view that allows them to see through any obstacle but on a short distance. And detect if the target is armed or not (civilian on enemy?) etc…
And we have a lot more of cool toys but we will unveil them later :)
As we could know, story of the game is based on the army coup in Russia. Does it mean that gameplay takes place in this country, or Ghosts are going to visit any other places and countries? What will we fight for and who will fight against us? Does Tom Clancy work on scenario, or his name in a title is just a part of a name of the series?
There is a wide variety of locations in the game.
The Ghosts are investigating on a weapons smuggling deal across the world. They will go from Southern America to Africa, Pakistan & finally to Eastern Europe. The more they know, the bigger the threat seems to be on the global peace.
At first the Ghost are fighting mercenaries, local warlords…
We are still collaborating with Tom Clancy but he is not directly involved on the scenario of the game.
Some Tom Clancy’s games from different series are connected with each other. Could we hope to see, for instance, H.A.W.X. pilots in the air of Future Soldier, any super weapons from the EndWar, or meet Sam Fisher?
All the air support that you will have is provided by the HAWX. That’s the only connection… so far.
How many missions does Future Soldier have? Will we have briefings in headquarters or on our way to the starting point of a mission? Will it be possible to choose equipment and plan actions with tactical map before missions?
There will be 11 missions. Between each mission you will be back on forward operation base.
There you will have access to a detail briefing. You will know more on the squad & its men, collect & browse through intelligence & prepare your next fight. Preparing your fight means customizing your gear and weapons.
What do you emphasize in your game? Effective command of the units, or use of appropriate devices in different situations, or crazy skirmishes?
In the maps we emphasis open-ended approach.
The player can approach each fight the way he wants. Be sneaky or go berserk it’s up to you. For recon and squad command it’s the same. It’s more a matter of playstyle.
What does new Ghost Recon gameplay look like? Is the invisible cloak important in gameplay? Does Ghost Recon give advanced opportunities for stealth action, or that cloak is just a useful thing in battles, when you want to attack enemy’s rear?
It’s a cover based shooter. Focus is on fight dynamism and on quick tactical orders.
The optical camo gives you more opportunity but doesn’t disrupt gameplay. In stealth it gives you more opportunity (stealth kill, reach the right sniping position…) and it fights it allows you to flank enemy. But it’s not invisibility. If you are not careful or if you don’t use your teammates to create a diversion enemy will see you.
How realistic is gameplay going to be? Is it easy to kill the Ghosts in battles or not? Will it be difficult to kill a moving target while running? Maybe, technologies of the future will help the characters to survive even direct hit of an armored shell?
It’s going to be lethal. You can kill enemies with only one bullet. The Ghosts are a little bit more solid but you’ll have to be carefull.
Ghosts are solid but suppression shows their true weakness : when under heavy fire (LMG, Explosions…), the Ghosts are not able to perform all actions & need support. Just like in real life.
Please, tell our readers about multiplayer. Owners of Splinter Cell: Conviction got access to Future Soldier’s multiplayer beta. Obviously, you emphasize a multiplayer part of the game. What are its main peculiarities? As we know, there will be a co-op mode. What other modes should we await?
Our MP is based on fight, intel & customization. We have put a lot of focus to have a more visceral fight. Intel is a simple loop that makes the game fun : you want to know where the others are & you don’t want them to know where you are.
All the game modes in multiplayer will be objective based. For the moment we have revealed Conflict. It’s a team deathmatch with random objectives appereaing on the map. Completing an objectives gives you much more points that just killing enemies.
Co-op is integrated in the campaign. You can play the full campaign form one to four players online.
And we still have so other stuffs coming :)
What engine does the game use? Please, tell about the Future Soldier’s graphics. What are system requirements for PCs?
The Yeti engine, a proprietary engine. It was the one powering the previous Ghost Recon games... Your PC questions are related to GRO…
The last question is about the release date. Is March 2012 a final one, or it might be delayed?
March 2012 is a final date for Ghost recon Future Soldier on X360 & PS3
Many thanks for your interview. Looking forward to play your game.
